More than 50 Ojai Unified School District teachers, wearing black, rallied at the Sept. 14 school board meeting demanding the district increase their salaries.

“We are wearing black today because we are mourning the death of our contract,” said Richard Byrd, a Meiners Oaks Elementary School teacher, whose shirt had the word “Solidarity” printed on it. “We are so committed to this district that we’ve chosen to work on an expired contract.” Other teachers wore black shirts with the words “Teacher Strong” or “Stronger Together” printed on them.
