Camille Collett Cromwell Chandler lived fully during her time, making impressions with all whom she met. Her life was characterized by enthusiasm, confidence and engagement. Camille was born in Ventura, CA, to Rodney Chandler and Carole Cromwell. She was early to walk, and early to talk, possessing uncommon energy and force of will. She spent most of her life in Ojai, especially fond of beach days and explorations of backcountry creeks. In her youth, Camille immersed herself in a full range of activities, finding success in softball, water polo, dance, acting, and singing. She danced with Ballet Folklorico, performing traditional Mexican dances. Attending Nordhoff High School, Camille took leading roles in excellent spring musical performances. As a member of The Ojai Shakespeare Company’s youth program, she continued to perform onstage in roles such as Titania, Faerie Queen, from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. She sang with the Renaissance youth group Harmonia Mundi, and in her adult years, with Madrigali. She sang at the graduations of her 2000 high school class, as well as graduation ceremonies held at CSU Channel Islands, where she majored in Spanish with a minor in Chicano Studies, then earned a teaching credential. Camille taught elementary school in Oxnard, as well as Bakersfield, and was beloved by her students. Camille’s family and numerous friends remember her as a bright, lively presence. Gregarious and festive, she was an event planning expert, an excellent cook, and a loving mother to her four children. Fluent in Spanish, and well-engaged in the Mexican American community, Camille enjoyed a truly multicultural life. Camille is survived by her maternal grandmother, Irina Cromwell; her father, Rodney Chandler; her mother, Carole Cromwell Paddock; her stepfather, Phil Paddock; her half-brothers, Richard Chandler and Luke Cromwell; her half-sister, Sharon Chandler; her four children, Ethan Aguilera, Xochitl Jurado, Joaquin Jurado and Santiago Jurado; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. A memorial service for Camille was held May 7 in Ojai. In her name, a scholarship for the Musical Arts at Nordhoff High School has been established.
