Winery vote a sad commentary
ANDREW R. HOLGUIN, Manager, Old Creek Ranch Winery
The Holguin Family’s Old Creek Ranch Winery’s Appeal to the Ventura County Board of Supervisors on Sept. 17 was a sad commentary on the state of land-use management in Ventura County and representative of why Ventura County has only one rural winery, while our friends in Santa Barbara have more than 300.

Vehicles are the real problem
A. ADAMS, Ojai
Sheri Ann Cate’s letter, dated Sept. 6, reminds me of the plastic straw ban, a picayune item compared to the multitudinous plastic containers in any well-stocked market.

Time to clear the air in Ojai
SHERI ANN CATE, Ojai
Thanks to the editor and publisher of the Ojai Valley News for your editorial about the “elephant in the room,” or rather, the elephant in the Ojai Valley. Our poor air quality (second worst in Ventura County behind Simi Valley) is mainly caused, not by cars, but by small 2- and 4-stroke engines (read gasoline-powered leaf blowers, lawn mowers, hedge trimmers etc., i.e. garden maintenance equipment).

Young men's kind assistance welcome
SIDNEY L. COHN, Ojai
I send thumbs up to the three young men who assisted me when I rolled my scooter and myself at Soule Park Golf Course. I hit some barriers on the side of the starter's office and I tumbled out of the scooter and onto the asphalt road. Almost immediately three young men appeared, helped me to my feet, and bandaged me up from the few cuts and bruises that resulted. I regret that I didn't get their names, but many thanks just the same; they were Johnnies on the spot!

Replace fear with facts
AL STROBERG, Ojai
It seems unlikely that Victoria Baldwin, in her exhortation to use Blue Dawn Dish Soap to kill weeds (OVN Aug. 16) is aware of the evaluation by the Environmental Working Group, which gave Dawn a “D” grade because of it containing methylisothiazolinone, which is a "High Concern: acute aquatic toxicity; Some Concern: skin irritation/allergies/damage." Dawn also contains 1 4-dioxane, which is considered a “groundwater contaminant.”

Try this instead of Roundup
VICTORIA BALDWIN, Ojai
Glyphosate is the active ingredient in the widely used herbicide, Roundup, which has been linked to cancer. Roundup is still sold at our local stores.

Show your moves for history
CATHERINE LEE, Oak View
July 27 was a fun, fun evening. The board of the Ojai Valley Museum offered an evening of fun, dance and family-friendly entertainment. Who knew that Mom and Dad could still “twist and shout”? Grandpa tried the moon walk! Fourth-graders learned all the steps to the macarena.

Let's protect our future
KRISTOFER YOUNG, Ojai
Most of us are not thinking ahead about the state of the world in which we live. Most of us are fully occupied making ends meet, and/or preparing for our personal and family futures.

Wonderful school
MELODY LINECKER, Ojai
In response to the article you reported last week, that Meiners Oaks Elementary and Matilija Junior High School have ranked low on the high-stakes testing performed on students in California and across the country every year — to the contrary!

Careful where you plant trees
HENRY BLAND, Ojai
Planting a tree in Ojai is very sweet,
Watching it grow is a lovely treat.
But planting an oak where people walk,
Someday a limb will fall — kerpalk!
