The Nordhoff High School basketball team won the 2019-2020 Citrus Coast League title along with the Carpinteria Warriors and scored a big first round playoff win over Laguna Blanca. In the second round, NHS traveled to face Rancho Alamitos but lost in overtime, 61-56.

Nordhoff wrestlers (left to right), Michael Trejo, Connor Brooks and Nick Stringer all placed at the CIF Southern Section Wrestling Championships. Trejo and Stringer will continue on to the CIF Masters Meet which will be held Feb. 21-22 at Sonora High School.
The Nordhoff High School wrestling team had three of its members place at the CIF Southern Section tournament Feb. 14-15. Nordhoff’s top placer was senior Nick Stringer who placed third at 108 pounds. Follow senior Michael Trejo took fourth place at 197 pounds and junior Connor Brooks finished in seventh place in the 140-pound division.

Ojai Valley School’s baseball team came out even this week, opening the season with a 11-7 loss to Nordhoff in the teams' first battle in more than two decades. Two days later, the OVS Spuds trounced rival Cate, 9-0.
Ojai Heatwaves swimmers make a splash at coastal championships

The Ojai Heatwaves recently sent 12 athletes to the 2020 Southern California Swimming Short Course Coastal Championships.
Twelve swimmers from the Ojai Heatwaves swim team qualified and competed at the 2020 Southern California Swimming Short Course Coastal Championships in Lompoc on Feb. 7-9. The Ojai swimmers all competed in the morning preliminary sessions, and many swam fast enough to qualify for the afternoon finals.
Nordhoff lacrosse to host golf event

The newest sport to hit the Nordhoff High School campus is girls’ lacrosse. The program is set to launch this spring and is hosting its first-ever nine-hole two-man scramble tournament Feb. 23 at Soule Park.

Nordhoff High School head wrestling coach Joey LeSuer was beaming with pride after the league championship meet. The Rangers had five wrestlers win league titles to go along with two second-place finishes and two third-place finishers. All nine will advance to this weekend’s CIF Southern Section meet.

Thacher falls to Villanova, but makes playoffs and advances

On Feb. 4, the Thacher Toads and Villanova Prep Wildcats faced off in a late season Frontier League soccer contest. The Wildcats fell behind 1-0 early in the match, but managed to fight back and scored four unanswered goals to roll to a 4-1 victory.

The Nordhoff High School girls water polo traveled to Fontana Feb. 12 to take on Summit High School in the opening round of the CIF Southern Section playoffs and earned a 6-3 victory to advance to the quarterfinals. The Lady Rangers will host El Rancho High School Feb. 15 at the Villanova Prep pool starting at 2 p.m.

The Nordhoff High School girls’ water polo team is 6-8 this season, with four of those wins coming against Citrus Coast League opponents. Sitting at 4-3 in league play, NHS is optimistic about qualifying for the postseason.

Korey Stevens and Michael Trejo recently learned they were selected to the All-CIF Southern Section Division 12 team for their efforts on the football field this fall. Both were multiyear starters and they were instrumental in helping head coach Lance Wiggins turn the program around.

Patino represents Nordhoff in county all-star game

Nordhoff’s Junior Patino recently represented his school in the 47th Annual Ventura County All-Star Football Game, which was held at Ventura College. Patino was the only Ranger to participate this season and he helped the West to a 42-26 over the East.

After defeating Malibu 68-30 late last week behind a school record 10 three pointers by senior Korey Stevens, Nordhoff High School boys’ varsity basketball team had an opportunity to all but clinch the Citrus Coast League title Tuesday when they hosted Carpinteria. However, defensive breakdowns and turnovers left the Rangers tied in first at 6-1 in league with the Warriors who prevailed 55-50.
Villanova Prep cruises past Besant Hill

On Jan. 24, the Villanova Prep Wildcats and Besant Hill Coyotes met in an all-Ojai showdown. The Wildcats had a hot shooting night and used it to their advantage as they topped Besant Hill 72-30. With the win, Villanova improved to 8-12 on the season, while Besant Hill is still chasing its first victory. The Wildcats will travel to Santa Barbara Jan. 31 to take on Bishop Diego, and the Coyotes wrapped up their regular season Jan. 30 against the Garden Street Academy.
10U Ojai All-Stars earn trip to sectionals

The 10U boys’ AYSO all-star team recently made the short trip to Santa Barbara to take part in the 2020 area all-star tournament. The local all-stars had a strong showing on the first day of the tournament and won their pool, which allowed them to advance to the semifinals the following day.
