Local hoopers get upgraded facility

The outdoor basketball courts at Matilija Junior High recently went through a major upgrade. The old hoops were replaced with new ones which come with glass backboards and modern rims. The blacktop was also resurfaced and repainted.

If you have been by Matilija Junior High School recently, you may have noticed the new-look outdoor basketball courts on the campus. Funded through Measure J, the courts were laid out in a more strategic fashion and they were resurfaced to fix cracks and other uneven areas.

Nordhoff’s Jake Palmer tied the Ventura County record for interceptions in a season as a junior. Now in his final season as a Ranger, Palmer is determined to perform even better this season.

When high school sports return to action this winter, one player local sports fans should keep an eye on is Nordhoff High School’s Jake Palmer. As a junior, Palmer tied the Ventura County record for interceptions in a season with 11 and would have broken the record, but one was called back due to a penalty.

The Soule Park Men’s Club held its annual club championship Sept. 19-20. After the two-day event, Robin Williams earned the 2020 gross club championship, an honor he has claimed for the last seven years.

Leeram Stoneman and the Nordhoff High School Football team should be facing the Oak Park Eagles in week four of the 2020 football season this evening, but instead they are hoping to return to the field in January after the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted all aspects of our daily lives.
Nordhoff football schedule released

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all high school sports in the state of California have been pushed back and will begin later in the year. The Nordhoff High School football team will kick off its season Jan. 8 against the Dos Pueblos Chargers. Due to the schedule change, the Rangers did lose their game against Cabrillo High School so their regular season schedule will consist of nine games this season.

Gibson captures record fifth Soule Senior’s crown

Five-time Soule Park Senior Men’s Golf Men’s 2020 Champion Lonnie Gibson (right) is congratulated by runner-up Rick O’Hara.
Ojai native and former Nordhoff standout golfer Lonnie Gibson captured his fifth Soule Park Senior Golf Club Championship in the last six years. Gibson’s 153 two-day total edged runner-up Rick O'Hara by a narrow margin of six strokes. Gibson overcame some rust after not playing much since the COVID shutdown and a sore knee to become the winningest senior of the annual club championship in the club’s 50-year history.

The 1983 Nordhoff's girls' volleyball championship team included five future Hall of Fame athletes on the roster. The team include (back row left to right) Heather Lindblom, Lisa Dalmatoff, Amy Svikhart, Christy Sawyer, and Coach Cher Glass. Front row (left to right): Leeana Merriweather, Joy Beckett, Kari Zimmerman, Lucy Tautz, and Stephanie Shank. The five Hall of Famers included Zimmerman (inducted in 1990), Beckett (inducted in 1992), Svikhart and Merriweather (both inducted in 1996), and Glass (inducted in 2001).

Tim Settem has been the water polo and swim coach at Villanova Preparatory School for the last five seasons and his teams have seen a great deal of success in and out of the pool. Settem recently added athletic director to his title, something he is thrilled about.
