March 29: Four deaths from COVID-19 in Ventura County; 109 tested positive — 2 in Ojai, 1 in Oak View

3 29 CASES2 Four people in Ventura County have died from COVID-19, according to Ventura County Public Health, which also reported Sunday, March 29, that there are now 109 positive COVID-19 cases in Ventura County, up 11 from the day before. Twenty-six people with COVID-19 are hospitalized.

Two of the people who are confirmed to have tested positive for COVID-19 are in Ojai and one is in Oak View.

In the near future, we are going to experience a coronavirus surge here in Ventura County. We don't know exactly what it will look like or feel like, but it will affect all of us.

Here's what we all need to understand: this virus is dangerous. For many of us — including younger people who are indeed contracting the virus at a high rate — coronavirus will feel like a bad flu. With luck, rest, and fluids, one could ride out the fever, cough, and body aches and start to improve over a period of weeks. However, if our experience in Ventura County is similar to other areas, up to 20% of confirmed cases will have a different experience.

The city of Ojai is keeping area trails open and is asking hikers to maintain at least a physical 6-foot distance.

Although developed Forest Service recreation sites are closed statewide throughout April, trails in the forest are open.

Jamie Fleming, chief executive officer with the Ojai Valley Chamber of Commerce, saw Ojai businesses rally during the Thomas Fire, and he’s seeing the same thing happen now, during the coronavirus emergency.

Fleming said he’s walked past downtown businesses that have closed per the governor’s order and was proud the shops, bars and restaurants were complying, despite the enormous financial hardship on their owners.

The Ojai City Council received a grim preliminary budget forecast at its March 24 meeting due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic.

City Manager James Vega said the city had a well-received meeting with the budget committee March 13, then, two hours later, the city declared a local emergency due to coronavirus concerns.

The nonprofit The Little Farm in Ojai recently acquired the donkeys put up for auction in Texas and likely bound for slaughter, according to founder Katie Cook.

OUSD serves students food to go at schools

Ojai Unified School District Superintendent Tiffany Morse, OUSD principals and Nutrition Services Director Julie Chessen prepare 1,000 meals to go for students on Sunday for students to pick up at school sites. OUSD will continue to provide school lunches and breakfast food throughout the duration of the district closure.

Students can go to any of the schools from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday to pick up meals. On Monday and Wednesday, students get meals for two days and for one day on Friday, so that the district is providing a total of five meals per week for students. OUSD will remain closed until at least May 4. The meals are available for all students, whether they attend OUSD schools or not.

Ventura County Public Health reported there are 61 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Ventura County as of Thursday, March 26, with 15 people hospitalized, and one person in his or her 70s who died from COVID-19 on March 22.

The number of confirmed positive COVID-19 cases in Ventura County is 11 more than reported Wednesday. A total of 1,288 tests have been completed at public and private labs in the county.

Low snow expected March 25

There’s a chance of very low snow in the mountains north of Ojai this evening through tomorrow morning.

Here’s a winter weather advisory as of 3 p.m. Wednesday, from Bob Kilpatrick, Caltrans Ojai area supervisor:

“Current conditions on 33 — light and spotty rain throughout the area, with snow starting to fall from Pine Mountain Inn to just south of Lockwood Valley Road. Not sticking. No restrictions are in place at this time. Be prepared for possible chain requirements this evening. If I-5 over the Grapevine closes due to snow, SR 33 will be closed as well. The closure on SR 33 will be from Fairview Road in Ojai to SR 166 in New Cuyama.”

Kilpatrick said Caltrans crews will be on duty from now through the duration of the storm, from Ojai to Ventucopa.

According to the National Weather Service, the snow level will start out at just above 5,000 feet, then lower rapidly this evening to between 3,000 and 3,500 feet. The snow level will then lower to around 2,500 feet Thursday morning.

County supervisors to hear reports on COVID-19 Tuesday

The Ventura County Board of Supervisors will hear reports March 24 regarding the novel coronavirus and the associated disease COVID-19.

The regular board meeting begins at 8:30 a.m. and will include a report on the status of eviction protections in California. Supervisors will also consider adopting an urgency ordinance temporarily suspending evictions in the unincorporated areas of the county.

The Ojai City Council will meet via teleconference at 7 p.m. March 24.
